2. The Titanic went down and many people were drowned

I assume that both are correct, Robocon.
The Titanic didn't intent to kill people by drowning them so maybe the first sentence seems right because the verb drown in this case is an intransitive verb.
Anyway, both sentences are correct since the difference between drown intransitive and drown transitive is difficult to tell.
Just IMHO..of course
the correct is 2
Both of them were wrong for we can't say with "drowned " ( Just " drown " is right enough here !.).
@ Lê Thị Ánh Nguyệt. Are you sure P2 of DROWN is DROWN, not DROWNED?
@ I think the second is correct. People were drowned (by an accident)
Thank you uncle (sorry for I don't know the real age of you,so it's very safe for me to call you along that way!)
Thanks@ phamduylan! for your correctly answer. In truth I'm not very sure about thatand this is noe my best chance for me to remember things more than a clearly sight. I've just appeared to think that why not is it with "drowned"? for the name of the song from Backstreet boys Band it's " DROWNING !".Why not is it???,Thank you for your warmly sharing!..
I think, it was an accident, so nothing makes the people drowned, we can't say the People were drowned. The answer is the First
I think the right choice is the second one...
