Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm known as The Grimm Brotherswere born at Hanau in Hasse-Kassel, Germany. Jacob Grimm the second son, was born on January 4, 1785 and Wilhelm Grimm the third son, was born on February 24, 1786. The Grimms were a large family of nine children, eight boys and one girl. Their father was a lawyer and after his death they set out to Kassel to attend law school and to follow in their father's footsteps.

The Grimms had been collecting fairy tales from the people of Hesse since the early 1800's. They had a favourite local storyteller named Marie Muller.

In 1812, the Grimm Brothers published their first volume of eighty-six stories and tales. In 1814 the second volume contained seventy stories. The stories were a success and the brothers were recognized for their work in 1819 with honorary doctorates from Marburg University.

In 1825 Wilhelm married Henriette Dorothea Wild. Through the years the brothers were working as librarians in different Universities.

In 1838 they began the work on the thirty-two volumes of a German dictionary, which focuses on history. Within the next ten years the Grimms resigned from their teaching at the university of Berlin and devoted their time to the completion of the dictionary. The Grimms did not live to see the final edition of their German dictionary.

Wilhelm Grimm died on December 16, 1859 and Jacob Grimm on September 20, 1863.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm là hai anh em nhà Grimm, họ sinh ra tại Hanau,Hasse-Kassel, Germany. Jacob Grimm là con thứ hai trong gia đình, ông sinh January 4, 1785, còn Wilhelm Grimm là con thứ ba, sinh February 24, 1786. Grimms là một đại gia đình gồm có 9 người con, 8 con trai và 1 con gái. Cha của họ là một luật sư, sau khi ông ấy qua đời, họ chuyển tới Kassel để tham gia trường Luật, tiếp nối bước chân của người cha.

Anh em Grimms đã tập hợp những truyện ngắn hư cấu của người Hesse từ trước năm 1800. Họ là những người kể chuyện địa phương nổi tiếng, tên họ là Marie Muller.

Năm 1812 Grimm Brothers xuất bản tác phẩm đầu tiên gồm 86 truyện ngắn. năm 1814 tác phẩm thứ hai gồm 70 truyện ngắn. những tác phẩm của họ rất là thành công và họ đã được trường đại học Marburg  University công nhận là tiến sĩ danh dự năm 1819.

Năm 1825 Wilhelm cưới bà Henriette Dorothea Wild. Trong những năm sau đó anh em nhà Grimms làm việc tại các thư viện của các trường đại học khác nhau.

Năm 1838 họ bắt đầu làm việc với 32 tác phẩm trong cuốn từ điển của Đức, tập trung vào lĩnh vực lịch sử. trong 10 năm tiếp theo anh em nhà Grimms đã giảng dạy tại trường đại học Berlin và dành toàn bộ thời gian để hoàn thành cuốn từ điển. anh em nhà Grimms đã không sống đến khi nhìn thấy ấn bản cuối cùng của cuốn từ điển mà họ đã làm ra.

Wilhelm Grimm mất December 16, 1859. Jacob Grimm mất September 20, 1863.
