"Having known" hay "Knowing"?
Question:
Is there any difference between the following sentences?
1- Knowing exactly what I wanted, I didn't spend much time shopping?
2- Having known exactly what I wanted, I didn't spend much time shopping?
Answer:
Yes, they have different grammar. You mean, any difference in meaning or style or use? Well, 1 is the normal way of saying it. At the time when you did the shopping, you knew what you wanted. The perfect in 2 is harder to use. Why would you say that you already knew, in the past, before you did your shopping? You could say you had already decided (Having decided exactly what I wanted), because deciding is an action that happens once. You decided before you went shopping. But knowing is a permanent state: once you know what you want, after that, you still know. So there's no need to put the knowing back into the past before the shopping. I hope this is clear - but it might not be!
