Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. First of all, let me thank you all for coming here today. My full name is: Huỳnh Bá Học. What I'm going to talk about today is "How do you improve English without spending a lot of money?"
English /'iŋgli∫/ is the most /moust/ important /im'po:tзnt/ language /'læŋgwidЗ/ in the world/wз:ld/ today. A very large /lα:dЗ/ number /'nΔmbз/ of people understand and use /ju:s/ English in all parts /pα:t/ of /ov, зv/ the world. Learning English is very important because it improves one's chance of getting a good job, helps one communicate in foreign countries, and broadens one's social networking. If you want to learn English well, of course you can. The key is to study carefully and to speak English as often as you can. So, today I am going to share with you my favourite methods to improve English without spending a lot of money.
Speak without Fear
The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They are afraid that they will not be able to pronounce the words correctly or that they will make a mistake that others will laugh about. Don't do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English requires practice. We should speak English confidently. We need to know how to learn from the mistakes. Don't let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.
Practise English everyday
There is the most important thing that leads to success learning English that it often practices English. Practicing is a good way to be better in communication because we can practice in real situation. So, we are necessary to make many foreigner friends for speaking together. Real communication situations provide opportunities for improving oral fluency. We have to spend time for learning English and give it part of our life.
Always Study and Review Phrases, Not Individual Words
Stop studying English words. That's right, do not memorize words. When I first studied English as a child, I learned a lot of words in a short time. My problem was I didn't know how to use them. If anyone wants to speak English automatically, like a native English speaker, they must learn phrases not just the words. When you discover a new word, always write down The Phrase it is used in. When you review, always review all of the phrases, not the single words.
Use all of your Resources
Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible, will allow you to learn faster. Nowadays, there are a lot of websites that we can learn English. It is convenient because we can learn English everywhere and we must not lose money to buy books. There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don't limit yourself to only one or two.
Slow, Deep Learning Is Best
The most important thing of all in learning a language is to have patience. If you keep working steadily, day after day, constantly practicing the language and using it at every opportunity, you will learn to speak a language well.
Do Exercises and Take Tests
Many people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun. However, by completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing.
Learn English in all areas
English is a difficult language to learn, because you need to learn it in all areas, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Here are some things that can help you learn English more easily in each area.
Reading
When you first begin to read English, don't try to understand every word. Instead, simply try to get a general idea of what you are reading; other words in the sentence will help you do this. If you don't understand the first time you read something, you can always go back later and use your dictionary to look up the words you don't quite know.
Writing
When you write, you can practice your English as effectively as you do when you read, only more so. Start with simple sentences and as you get better, make sentences longer and more complicated. You can also use the Internet this way. You can visit chat rooms, or write a blog. As you learn, you can also look at a variety of writing topics that help you improve your writing skill with graphics and sound.
Speaking
Speak as much as you can in English, even though you may be uncomfortable at first. The more you speak, the easier it will become for you to express yourself in English. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. This will also help you begin to think in English. As you get better, you will longer have to translate from your language to English or vice versa as you speak. Even if you're not sure, use sentences that sound right to you.
Listening
To get English fluency, you must have a lot of understandable repetitive listening. It's not necessary for you to hear every single word. You just need to listen carefully for the words that will give you the main idea of the topic discussed.
TV is on of the best resource for hearing and listening to English. This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can improve your vocabulary. Music can be a very effective method of learning English. In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension. All they will also help you learn English well, get pronunciation correct and speech patterns down the right way as well.
Finally, remember that everyone will understand that you are learning to speak English and are likely to be shy when you try it at first. This is not a problem. If you don't start, you will never learn, so give it a try; even though the first time might be hard, the next will be easier, and the next even easier, and so on. The more you speak English, the better you'll become, so don't be afraid.
That's all for my talk today. Thank you for listening. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I would be happy to answer any questions you have.
