Learning English is important to many people, especially for young people who face challenges in looking for foreign work. I have learned English since grade 6 until graduating from Uni. However, my English is nothing in comparison to my first language. I am shy in speaking English because I don't speak well, and only understanding simple sentences. Doesn't matter how I learn, If English is not used often, I will forget very soon. Is there any method that helps me to overcome these issues?
I realize that I need to practice English daily, therefore, an environment for practicing English is important. With the help of the Internet I am able to make friends with many learners around the world. Most of my friends are learners like me, a few are native English speakers who want to help non English speaking learners. I like to learn from video clips because the picture associated with a word can be easier to remember. On a good day I try to learn as many words as possible, and for each word I learn some simple sentences made for that word. I am not learning new words every day, but make use of what I have learned by writing simple sentences and listening to conversation to see if I can spot them.
I spend more time on listening and speaking. While listening I write down what I heard onto a piece of paper so laterly I can use them to reconstruct the story or for writing a similar story. Listening to music is good for learning English because each song conveys a story. I listen to music with slow melody and music for kids. While practice speaking, I record my sounds in a word, and compare it with the sounds from the dictionary. At home, speaking to no one is difficult, so I choose to speak to someone in a clip. I prefer the American accent, but listening to any accents. All teaching methods focus on natural speaking, that's to speak like a native with accent and intonation. Certain words in a sentence are stressed and going together. I learn accent by listening to simple sentences and slow speaking story. Apart from speaking to my friends using Skype, I test my speaking skill by speaking to some software called EyeSpeak 2 on PC and SpeakingPal on mobile. The software has an ability to understand your voice in English if you speak correctly. At first, the software didn't understand what I said. However, after many times of rehearsal, I got an Ok.
Speaking well is the most challenge for me to solve. Finally, I invented a formula called "Há Mồm" to help me in speaking. When speaking English, you must open your mouth, and move your tongue and lips up to some degree. The Ha Mom method is used to open my mouth so I can speak easily. To start speaking, I draw a shape of an "H" from my teeth toward the throat under my nose. The width of the H spans across your tongue like a bridge. Now I can speak with ease by moving the tip of your tongue up and down and bending its sides. When speaking English, I follow the advice to stop thinking about grammar. This helps me to speak more smoothly.
For writing and reading, grammar helps me to write correctly, and understand the structure of the sentence. I have learned most of the grammar that I can understand. For complex parts of grammar I learn on a need basic. Every day, I read news on Yahoo.com. I only read the news headlines and some summary. When I see something interesting, I try to read more on the story. The interesting topics include stories on car accidents, global warming and new technology. These stories describe what happened in another country, but I can use English in those stories to describe similar situation where I Iive. Writing a few sentences and small story helps me to refresh my English.
Sometimes, for relaxing purpose, I make sentences from a list of words. It's easy to ask simple questions such as where is the school? Who is the teacher? And How to go to school? Etc. Writing and reading helps to expand my English vocabulary. While seeing a situation, I attempt to think and explain in English. English in my mind is a layer of oil and my first language is a layer of water. They are separated but connected via meaning and pictures.
I'm unable to come up the conclusion to finish the whole story. However, I hope my writing will give some ideas into your essay.
