ACTUALLY & REALLY
Có sự khác biệt nhỏ giữa hai ngữ cảnh khi sử dụng ACTUALLY và REALLY như sau:
A. ACTUALLY (trên thực tế, sự thật là ...): được dùng khi có một sự hiểu lầm hay do ai đó không nắm bắt/biết được một thông tin, nên một người khác đang cố giải quyết sự hiểu lầm hoặc nói cho biết/làm sáng tỏ thông tin đó.
VD: A: Want to go to the movies?
B: Actually I can't. I have to stay with my younger brother at home.
1. actually (surprise): được dùng trong những câu có thông tin gây ra sự ngạc nhiên hoặc sự trái ngược với những gì người ta mong đợi.
I didn't like him at first, but in the end I actually got quite fond of him.
It really gets me the way we're expected to actually laugh at his pathetic jokes!
I didn't actually want any more dessert, but Julia forced it on me.
Peter might look a bit fierce, but actually he's fairly harmless.
2. actually (saying NO): làm cho câu thêm phần trang trọng, chẳng hạn như khi bạn diễn đạt một ý kiến trái ngược, hiệu chỉnh/chỉnh sữa điều mà người khác đã nói, hoặc từ chối một lời đề nghị.
"Alexander looks like he'd be good at sports." "Actually, he's not."
Actually, Gavin, it was Tuesday of last week, not Wednesday.
"Do you mind if I smoke?" "Well, actually, I'd rather you didn't."
I wouldn't mind something to eat, actually.
"Did your American friends enjoy their stay?" "Yes. Actually, they're Canadian."
"Mark's coming today to look at the books." "Actually, it's tomorrow."
"You must be exhausted after that long journey." "Actually, I feel fine."
B. REALLY (thật sự là, thật ra là...): được dùng khi muốn nhấn mạnh điều gì
Ex: A: Want to go to the movies?
B: Really I can't. I told you already I have to stay with my younger brother at home.
That pasta was really delicious. Thank you.
I really like those photographs. Can we see them on the computer?
Emigrating to Canada was a really big decision for the whole family.
They don't look pleased to me. Are they really pleased?
I'm not really angry, but I wanted them to think about their behaviour.

3. Really (Thật à? Thật không? Vậy à!): để diễn tả sự ngạc nhiên hay thú vị, chúng ta có thể dùng "really" để đáp lại người đối diện:
"They're going on a cycling holiday to France." "Really?" "Yes, and they're going to the Alps!"
'I've decided to move back to York.' 'Really? But why?'
'Emma will be 21 in April.' 'Will she really? I hadn't realized.'
'It was the best holiday we've ever had .' 'Oh, really?'
'I don't care what you think.' 'Well, really!'
