AS IF - AS THOUGH
Như thể, cứ như là...
I. AS IF/AS THOUGH + real tenses: đối với các tình huống đúng, có thật ở quá khứ, hiện tại hoặc tương lai.
VD1: He looks as if he knows the answer.
Anh ấy làm như thể biết câu trả lời.
=> he knows the answer. (Anh ấy biết câu trả lời.)
=> real tense: present simple => real situation
VD2: It looks as if they have a shock.
Họ cứ như là bị sốc vậy.
=> they have a shock. (Họ bị sốc.)
=> real tense: present simple => real situation
Tương tự:
VD3: Women that suffer from baldness will feel as if they are no longer attractive.
Những phụ nữ bị hói sẽ cảm thấy như thể mình không còn hấp dẫn nữa.
=> They are no longer attractive. (Họ không còn hấp dẫn nữa.)
=> real tense: present simple => real situation
VD4: He seems as if he hasn't slept for days.
Anh ấy cư như là không ngủ mấy ngày rồi vậy.
=> He hasn't slept for days. (Anh ấy không ngủ mấy ngày rồi.)
=> real tense: present perfect => real past situation.
VD5: It looks as if they have had a shock.
Họ cứ như là bị sốc vậy.
=> They have had a shock. (Họ bị sốc.)
=> real tense: present perfect simple => real past situation
It doesn't look as if the economy will improve anytime soon.
I've got so much work it looks as though I'll have to stay at home this evening.

My sister is acting so strange. When I talk to her, it's as if she's not even listening to me.
My goodness those children are loud! It's sounds as though there's a herd of animals running around upstairs.
Wow! Look at those dark clouds. It looks as if it's going to rain.

It's getting colder outside. It feels as if fall has arrived.
II. AS IF/AS THOUGH + unreal tenses (the past subjunctive/past perfect subjunctive)
=> đối với các tình huống giả định (không đúng, không có khả năng xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc quá khứ.), cho dù thì của câu là gì đi nữa -> Không dùng với "the present subjunctive".
Động từ chính "TO BE" sau "AS IF/AS THOUGH" sẽ thành "WERE" đối với tất cả các ngôi.
1. + past subjunctive (giả định quá khứ đơn) => tình huống giả định ở hiện tại.
VD1: He looks as if he knew the answer.
Anh ấy cứ như là biết câu trả lời.
=> He gives the impression that he knows the answer, but he (probably) doesn't know or we don't know whether he knows or not.
=> Anh ấy làm ra vẻ biết câu trả lời, nhưng có lẽ không biết, hoặc chúng ta không biết là anh ấy biết câu trả lời hay là không.
=> unreal tense: past subjunctive => unreal present situation
VD2: It looks as if they had a shock.
Họ như thể bị sốc vậy.
=>They give the impression that they have a shock, but they (probably) don't or we don't know whether they have or not.
=> Họ như thể bị sốc, nhưng có lẽ không , hoặc chúng ta không biết là họ có bị sốc hay là không.
=> unreal tense: past subjunctive => unreal present situation
She walks as if she were a supermodel.
He spends money as if he owned a bank.
He boarded the airplane as those he were a seasoned traveller.
The floods were rising and it was as if it were the end of the world.
I spoke to her today and it sounded as though she was getting a cold.
The airplanes were so close together it looked as if they were going to crash!
2. + past perfect subjunctive (giả định quá khứ hoàn thành) => tình huống giả định ở quá khứ:
VD1: He seemed as if he hadn't slept for days.
Anh ấy cứ như là đã không ngủ mấy ngày rồi.
=> It seemed that he hadn't slept for days, but he (probably) had or we don't know whether he had or not
=> Anh ấy như thể đã không ngủ mấy ngày rồi, nhưng anh ấy có thể có ngủ, hoặc chúng ta không biết là anh ấy (đã) có ngủ mấy ngày hay là không.
=> unreal tense: past perfect subjunctive => unreal past situation
VD2: It looked as if they had had a shock.
Họ như thể bị sốc vậy.
=> They gave the impression that they had a shock, but he (probably) hadn't or we don't know whether they hahad or not.
=> Họ như thể bị sốc, nhưng có lẽ không, hoặc chúng ta không biết là họ có bị sốc hay là không.
=> unreal tense: past perfect subjunctive => unreal past situation
It looked as if they had had a shock.
He seemed as if he hadn't slept for days.
She felt as if all her worries had gone.
They felt as though they had been given the wrong information.
Lưu ý: Ngoài ra "AS IF/AS THOUGH" còn được một động từ nguyên mẫu có "to" hoặc một cụm giới từ theo sau.
VD: She moved her lips as if to smile.
They were shouting as though in panic.
