I. AFFIRMATIVE FORM:

1. Semi-modal: need + bare infinitive

(the third person singular of the present tense does not end in '-s')

       This is the only thing you need do.

       She need rest.

 * We can't use another modal verb with the semi-modal "need":

   Chúng ta không dùng bán trợ động từ "need" với một trợ động từ khiếm khuyết khác được.

        Not: Nobody must need read this.

 

2. Main verb: need + to infinitive/noun/V-ing

(the third person singular of the present tense ends in '-s')

       This is the only thing you need to do.

       She needs to rest.

       I need help now. (need + noun) 

       This shirt needs washing. (need + V-ing)

       = This shirt needs to be washed.

 * We can use another modal verb with the main verb "need":

   Chúng ta có thể dùng động từ chính "need" với một trợ động từ khiếm khuyết khác.

        Nobody must need to read this.

 

Lưu ý:  

 The semi-modal need has no past simple form.

  Bán trợ động từ "need" không có hình thức quá khứ đơn.

        Not: They needed read this.

  Instead, we use "needed to" when we express an obligation in the past.

  Thay vào đó, chúng ta dùng động từ chính "needed + to" khi đề cập đến một sự bắt buộc trong quá khứ.

          =>  They needed to read this.

 

II. NEGATIVE FORM:

1. Semi-modal: need + not + bare infinitive

       He needn't worry.

       You needn't mention this to your father.

 2. Main verb: doesn't/don't/didn't + need + to infinitive/noun/V-ing

       He doesn't need to worry.
       You don't need to mention this to your father.

       You don't need an umbrella. (need + noun)
       My hair doesn't need cutting for at least another month. (need + V-ing)

 

Lưu ý:

a.The semi-modal need has no past simple form.

        Not: I didn't need buy any books. They were all in the library.

 Instead, we use didn't need to or didn't have to when we express no obligation in the past.

Thay vì vậy, chúng ta dùng động từ chính "didn't need to" hoặc "didn't have to" khi đề cập đến sự không bắt buộc trong quá khứ.
         =>  I didn't need/have to buy any books. They were all in the library.

 

b. The semi-modal "need" has no past simple form, but it can be used in the pattern "need not have/needn't have + a past participle", to show that although someone did something, it was not necessary:

   Bán trợ động từ "need" không hình thức quá khứ đơn, nhưng có thể được dùng theo cấu trúc "need not have/needn't have + past participle" để nói rằng mặc dù ai đó đã làm một việc gì thì việc đó cũng không cần thiết.
           She needn't have come. (She came.)
           Lẽ ra cô ấy không cần phải đến.
           They needn't have waited for me. (They waited for me.)
           Lẽ ra họ không cần phải đợi tôi.

 

III. INTERROGATIVE FORM:

1. Semi-modal (formal): Need + S. + bare infinitive?

        Need it be so dark in here?

        Need we write this down?

 2. Main verb: Does/Do/Did + need + to infinitive?

       Does it need to be so dark in here?
       Do we need to write this down?
