1. Ability (can): khả năng làm được gì
I can speak French.
The machine can translate simple messages into 24 different languages.

2. Permission(can/could/may/might): xin phép
a. can (informal): không trang trọng
You can borrow my calculator if you want.
Anyone aged 18 or over can vote in a general election.

b. could/may/might (formal): trang trọng

Could we stop by next week?
May we come in now?

Might I ask the president a question?

3. Offers and requests; suggestion (can/could/shall/may/might/would): đề nghị, yêu cầu...

4. Possibility (can/could/may/might/would): khả năng có thể xảy ra
a. can (informal): không trang trọng
If it's fine tomorrow, we can go fishing.

b. may/could (a fair possibility - formal) => có khả năng xảy ra nhiều hơn "might" - trang trọng
