Can You Start a Sentence with the Word "However"?

It is fine to start a sentence with however. You just need to know when not to use a comma, when to use a comma, and when to use a semicolon.

I. "However" without a Comma => a Modifier

If you use however at the beginning of a sentence and don't insert a comma, however means "no matter how."

II. "However" with a Comma => a Connector

"However" có dấu phẩy theo sau => liên từ

If you use however at the beginning of a sentence and insert a comma after it, however means "nevertheless" or "but".

Nếu bạn dùng "however" ở đầu một câu và đặt dấu phẩy sau nó, lúc này "however" có nghĩa là "Tuy nhiên, tuy thế, nhưng mà".

=> Used to introduce a statement that contrasts with something that has just been said; or used when you are changing the subject

A semicolon, rather than a comma, should precede conjunctive adverbs when they link two complete sentences.

Hoặc: She was highly creative and talented; success, however, remained elusive for her.

Not:    She was highly creative and talented, success, however, remained elusive for her.

           Cô ấy rất có tài và sáng tạo; tuy nhiên, sự thành công dường như vẫn còn lãng tránh cô.

 

Khác với:          The sporting events, however, continued despite the weather.

                          Tuy nhiên, các sự kiện thể thao vẫn tiếp diễn bất chấp thời tiết thế nào.
