It’s Better to be First Than it is to Be Better Posted In Business Vision,Practical Strategies | No comments
The first is the Law of Leadership. “It’s better to be first than it is to be better.” Remember Charles Lindbergh? The first person to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean. But do you know the name of the second person to fly solo? I bet not. It was Bert Hinkler. By all accounts he was a better pilot than Lindberg, he flew faster, and he consumed less fuel. But who ever heard of him?
Most of the time you hear this law mentioned in marketing circles as “developing your brand as first in your market”. Well in Glazer-Kennedy style marketing, we say you need to create your message that describes you as the leading, one of a kind, first in the field in you niche. You need to be first in your customer’s minds when they think of your products and services. So how can you create a marketing message that describes you, your product or service as the leader?
I’m sorry to say, your product or service is not going to put you there. Regardless of reality, people perceive the first product into the mind as superior. And to put your product and service into the minds of your customers requires smart marketing. Remember, marketing is a battle of perceptions, not products.
So here are some questions for you to think about:
What is the name of the first brand of aspirin? First brand of acetaminophen? First brand of ibuprofen? Frist brand of English Muffin? Just substitute leading for first and you’ll have your answers
Can you answer these questions?
Who was the second person to run the four-minute mile? Who was the second person to walk on the moon? Who was the second president of the United States? If you are second in the prospects mind, are you doomed forever to be some unknown English Muffin?
Fortunately not, for there are other laws! Theo Internet
