ON the Street - IN the Street
A. When talking about addresses:
I. AmE uses 'ON'. => talking about addresses:
She works on Oakwood Street.
Diane's house is on Cherry Street.
He lives on 79th Avenue, doesn't he?
II. BrE uses both "IN/ON", but in different situations:
1. 'IN' is used to suggest an address = nói đến địa chỉ -> tên đường
I live in Kennington Road.
Diane's house is in Cherry Street.
2. 'ON' is used to suggest the general location of a larger or very well-known place = nói đến một nơi/địa điểm lớn hoặc rất nổi tiếng (tọa lạc trên một con đường).
Greenville is on Highway 57.
She has a big new store on Oxford Street.
There's a nice church on this street.
Note: Do not use IN/ON with exact addresses (addresses that have house numbers or building numbers) = không dùng IN/ON với địa chỉ chính xác (có số nhà/số tòa nhà)
wrong: *He lives in/on 4732 Marshall Drive. => at
wrong: *Alice's office is in/on 26515 Main Street. => at
Correct: He lives at 128 Oxford Street.
B. If you are talking about something that is placed on the street or where people drive, normally both AmE and BrE would use 'IN' = nếu bạn đang nói về một cái gì đó được đặt trên con đường hoặc nơi mà người ta lái xe, thường thì người Anh và người Mỹ đều dùng IN.
=> "in the street" = in the middle of the street = lòng đường
But "on the street" is alongside the street on either side = nhưng "on the street" là dọc theo con đường trên lề bên này hoặc lề bên kia => lề đường
Look! She's walking in the street!
Nhìn kìa! Bà ấy đang đi dưới lòng đường!
Watch out! There is a tire in the road.

People ride bicycles on the street, not in it!

Children shouldn't play in the street, even when there isn't much traffic.

C. When it is clear that a street's surface, not its sides, is being referred to, use ON = khi đề cập rõ đến bề mặt con đường, không phải hai bên lề đường, ta dùng ON.
Traffic was very heavy on the freeway this morning.

Did you hear about the accident on Riverside Boulevard?

There are a lot of cars on the road today! = There is a lot of traffic today!

Note: Thành ngữ "on the street" = "on the streets" có các nghĩa sau:
1. Homeless: vô gia cư
Some of these people have been living on the streets for years.
Funding to help families on the street is running out.
2. Not in prison, or released from prison: không ở trong tù, được phóng thích
The murderer is still on the street(s).
3. Working as a prostitute: làm gái mãi dâm
There are fewer girls on the streets these days, so prices have risen.
