Sự khác nhau giữa PLENTY OF & VARIETY OF

PLENTY OF & VARIETY OF:

Hai danh từ này đều có nghĩa là "nhiều/rất nhiều", nhưng "plenty of" chỉ đề cập đến "số lượng", còn "variety of" đề cập đến nhiều kiểu/thứ... (đa dạng/phong phú) trong cùng một loại.

1. plenty (of something) (pronoun): A large or sufficient amount or quantity; more than enough: We use "plenty of" as a quantifier before both countable and uncountable nouns to mean 'a lot', 'a large quantity': đề cập đến số lượng nhiều => rất nhiều...

        => có rất nhiều thời gian.

         => có đủ thời gian (hoặc dư thời gian)

2. variety (of something) (countable noun): A number or range of things of the same general class that are distinct in character or quality: đề cập đến nhiều kiểu/thứ trong cùng một loại có đặc tính hoặc chất lượng riêng biệt => rất nhiều, đa dạng, phong phú... muôn vàn kiểu/thứ trong cùng một loại.  

He resigned for a variety of reasons.

This tool can be used in a variety of ways.

I was impressed by the variety of dishes on offer.

She does a variety of fitness activities.

The equipment could be used for a variety of educational purposes.

Students are offered a wide variety of courses in this department.

 

There + Singular Verb + a variety of + plural noun. (1)

=> Dùng động từ số ít khi muốn nhấn mạnh nghĩa "đa dạng, phong phú". 

There is a wide variety of patterns to choose from.

There is a variety of choices/methods.

There is a variety of books for you to choose.

=> Lưu ý: So với (2) thì đây là cấu trúc "an toàn" khi đi thi cử.

 

There + Plural Verb + a variety of + plural noun. (2)

=> Dùng động từ số nhiều khi muốn nhấn mạnh nghĩa của danh từ số nhiều đứng sau.
