Các vị trí của Trạng từ chỉ tính thường xuyên

Chúng ta hãy chia các trạng từ chỉ tính thường xuyên ra thành hai nhóm:

Group "a": always, continually, frequently, occasionally, often, once, twice, periodically, repeatedly, sometimes, usually.

Group "b": ever, hardly ever, never, rarely, scarcely ever, seldom.

Cả hai nhóm thường được đặt ở ba vị trí sau:

1. Sau động từ "to be":

       He is always in time for meals.

      The home is often the most likely place to have an accident.

      There was hardly any wind, just a slight breeze.

       She's usually home by this time.

       We're not always this busy!

       Iron supplements aren't usually necessary for men.

       Professor Morgan isn't often at a loss for words.

 

2. Trước tất cả các động từ thường:

      They sometimes stay up all night.

      We seldom see each other any more.

      We often go there.

      Don't ever do that again.

      Never say that again!

      Never forget this rule!

 

3. Đứng giữa trợ động từ (sau trợ động từ thứ nhất) và trước động từ chính; hoặc sau "Auxiliary + subject" trong câu hỏi:

       He can never understand.

       You've hardly eaten anything.

       You should always check your oil before starting.

       You have often been told not to do that. (Đứng sau trợ động từ thứ nhất "have")

       She doesn't usually get involved in politics.

       It doesn't often snow here at Christmas.

       I don't  ever download music from the Internet.

       Have you ever ridden a camel?

       Should I always check my oil before starting?

       Have you ever been to Cape Town?

       

Ngoại lệ:

1. Đứng trước trợ động từ "Used to" và "have to":

      They always used to ring me and say what they were doing.

      You hardly ever have to remind him; he always remembers.

      We often used to see built in furniture in older homes.

     We often have to work outside normal hours.

2. Các trạng từ chỉ tính thường xuyên thường được đặt trước các trợ động từ khi các trợ động từ này được dùng độc lập khi nói thêm để làm chú ý hoặc trong các câu trả lời ngắn.

       I know I should take exercise, but I never do.

 

      A: Can you park your car near the shops?

      B: Yes, I usually can.

 

      A: Do you go skiing most weekends in winter?

      B: Yes, we often do.

 

      A: Will you ever change?

      B: I never will.

 

       A:Has Shirley ever been to Austria?

       B:She never has.

 

        A: Do they ever study together?

       B:They sometimes do.

 

         A: Is Jessica ever wrong?

         B:She seldom is.

 

3. Đứng trước các trợ động từ và động từ chính khi trợ động từ được nhấn mạnh, hoặc khi có thêm trợ động từ "do":

      I never can remember. She hardly ever has met him.

      Don't rush him. He needs time to remember. He often can't think of everything off hand.

      Đừng hối thúc ông. Ông cần thời gian để nhớ ra. Ông thường không nhớ được bất cứ điều gì ngay tức thì cả.

       I often don't travel by air because the cost of flying is very high.

       I always do arrive in time!

 

4. Các trạng từ ở nhóm (a) cũng có thể đặt ở đầu hoặc cuối một câu/ mệnh đề:

Group "a": always, continually, frequently, occasionally, often, once, twice, periodically, repeatedly, sometimes, usually.

        Often, students with family problems have difficulties at school.

        Sometimes it's so cold I don't even want to leave the house.

        My dad cooks dinner sometimes, but usually my mum does it.

       Simmer the sauce for ten minutes, stirring occasionally.

        We go to the theatre only very occasionally

        I like to be on my own sometimes.

       I've only been there once.

a. "always" hiếm khi đặt ở đầu câu/mệnh lệnh, trừ loại câu mệnh lệnh:

       Always wash your hands before the meal!

       Always lock your car.

       Always watches it everyday!

       Always do your best!

       Always be truthful!

 

b. "often"thường được dùng với "very, so, fairly, quite" khi được đặt ở cuối câu/mệnh đề hơn) có nghĩa là "khá/rất thường xuyên":

       Often he walked.

       He walked quite often.

       We went to the theatre fairly often.

       I go to the gym very often.

       I don't meet him very often. (Tôi không gặp anh ấy thường xuyên lắm.)

 

5. Các trạng từ ở nhóm (b): hardly ever, never, rarely, scarcely ever, seldom (không dùng "ever") cũng có thể đặt ở đầu một câu, nhưng phải đảo động từ chính theo cấu trúc: 

              Hardly/Scarcely ever... + Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb ...

      Hardly/Scarcely ever did they manage to meet unobserved.

      Seldom does Bob get invited to parties. (seldom = rarely)

      Never have we seen such a breathtaking view.

      Hardly/Scarcely had he stepped outside when it started to rain.

      Never did I think I would see my book in print.

      Seldom  have we had a professor with such enthusiasm.

      "Scarcely had  he finished speaking when the door of the queen's apartment opened...."

Lưu ý: "hardly" / "scarcely ever", "never", "rarely" và "seldom" không được dùng với các động từ phủ định.
