1. robber: someone who takes money or property illegally, often by using threats or violence: ăn cướp có vũ khí.

2. mugger - a robber who takes property by threatening or performing violence on the person who is robbed (usually on the street): cướp trên đường phố, có vũ khí; cướp cạn...
VD:
A person who comes up to you on a dark street who says "give me all your money," is an example of a mugger.
A mugger robbed him of all of his money.
3. thief = stealer: someone who steals something. (a theft: một vụ trộm)
VD:
The thief stole a valuable painting from the museum.

4. shoplifter: a person who steals goods from a shop during shopping hours: ăn cắp đồ ở siêu thị, cửa hàng...
