SUDDENLY
SUDDENLY: happening unexpectedly; quickly and without warning;
1. Đứng đầu câu: khi muốn nhấn mạnh nghĩa của trạng từ này.
Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her side.
Suddenly, I heard a loud scream.
Suddenly all the lights went out.
Suddenly, I felt afraid.
2. Đứng giữa câu: khi không muốn nhấn mạnh nghĩa của trạng từ này.
a. thường đứng trước các tha/ngoại động từ (transitive verbs: có túc từ theo sau):
I suddenly realized what I had to do.
Jack suddenly stopped talking when Mary entered the room. => "stopped: transitive"
The man suddenly started shooting his gun.
b. trước các động từ kết nối (linking verbs: become, feel, stay, get ...+ adjective):
She suddenly became famous.
Tom suddenly felt tired.
He suddenly stayed calm. Stopped stumbling over the words.
I suddenly got very worried about Tom.
c. giữa trợ động từ và động từ chính:
The temperature has suddenly dropped.
He's suddenly playing very smart.
She felt him appear, as though the AC was suddenly set to high.
3. Đứng sau động từ "to be"; thường đứng sau các tự/nội động từ (intransitive verbs: không có túc từ theo sau) => khi nghĩa của trạng từ không quan trọng.
I'm suddenly tired.
The room is suddenly brighter and more exciting.
He stopped suddenly. (=> intransitive, so với VD 2 của 2a.)
George II died suddenly.
Prices dropped suddenly.
"Do you remember much about the accident?" "No, it all happened so suddenly."
He swerves suddenly to avoid a car as he loses his concentration on the road for a split second as he turns to look at me.
