THEN & AFTERWARD(S)
A. THEN (Adverb): gồm các nghĩa sau đây:
1. 'at that time': lúc đó... (đề cập đến quá khứ hoặc tương lai, trường hợp này "then" thường đứng sau mệnh đề).
A: When I was a child, I lived in Austria for a while.
B: What age were you then?
This time next week, I'll be on a plane to Kiev. Where will you be then?
2. 'next': kế tiếp, tiếp đó, tiếp theo, sau đó, rồi thì... (một loạt các sự kiện/sự việc/biến cố xảy ra nối tiếp nhau)
He opened the door, then the lights came on and everybody shouted, 'Happy Birthday'.
Heat some olive oil in a pan, then add some chopped garlic and some salt.
...Then I will save money to start my own business.
3. 'in addition' (Spoken): ngoài ra...
Hiring a car is an extra expense on holiday and then there's the cost of insurance.
Here's our bedroom and then we have two more bedrooms down here.
4. 'in that case': nếu vậy, trong trường hợp đó... (We use then with if to talk about cause and effect).
If we buy Jason a present, then we'll have to buy one for Isaac too.
If you are interested in food, then you will love this book.
Lưu ý: Trong văn nói, chúng ta thường dùng "then" ở cuối mệnh đề với nghĩa "in that case" (nếu vậy).
VD: You don't want anything to eat? Okay. So I'll just get you a coffee then.
Anh không muốn ăn gì hết à? Được rồi. Nếu vậy tôi sẽ mang cho anh một tách cà phê.
B. AFTERWARD(S): at a later time, after something else that you have already mentioned: (thời gian) sau đó... (sau một sự việc/sự kiện mà bạn vừa mới đề cập đến)
Let's go and see a film and afterwards we could go for a meal.
I didn't see her again until a few days afterwards.
Afterwards she was sorry for what she'd said.
Let's go out now and eat afterwards.
Shortly afterwards he met her again.
We agreed on a price but afterwards they wanted £10 extra.
If you're a good boy at the doctor's I'll take you swimming afterwards.
Everyone would go into the hall for assembly and then afterwards we'd go to our respective classes.
